We received numerous replies from many recipients. There are comments & advices in improving the news letter. Thank you and we appreciated your thoughts and ideas. This news letter is our commitment in educating the public about on the importance of measurement and calibration. Therefore you can print or share this newsletter with others if you wish. We also like to congratulate to our customer that has placed quality as the first agenda in their organization

We expect many readers already knows what is the definition of measurement that has been explained earlier (If you still not convince or grey about the matter, do call or email to me to get in depth information, many had does it!)

In this second edition we will continue to explain the understanding of measurement.

In measurement there is a system to understand:-

ü Physical standard
ü Document Standard/ Spec.
ü Legal Metrology
ü Accreditation

Physical Standard is references that were used in order to measure or calibrate an equipment or instrument. For e.g. in order to Calibrate an Analytical balance, a standard weight must be used, Like wise, to measure a caliper we may need a gauge block as a reference.

In measuring the equipment, it is important to follow a correct modus operandi that was Documented. The procedure also must follow the specification given in the document.

Legal metrology is another set of measurement procedure that applies to trading industries. As along as it involves trade transaction, there will be a requirement for Legal Metrology. Metrology is also known as science of measurement.

The Legal Metrology exists in order to coerce law and order in trading affair for e.g. you can see sometimes officers from Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affair make an inspection at the wet market on the weigh scale to find whether it is accurate or not.

It is important that only qualified organization to perform the measurement activities. If not anybody can claim they can measure or calibrate an equipment. It is important for a company to acquire Accreditation for the measurement exertion. This is because in measurement it is important to follow the quality system. Only from there the level of measurement or calibration can be trusted.

In Malaysia, only accredited bodies can perform measurements exercise e.g Sime SIRIM Technologies. Sime SIRIM is an accredited laboratory for Calibration as it adheres to ISO 17025. Another example is SIRIM QAS that is an accredited laboratory for testing. In SIRIM Berhad there are many laboratories for testing services. Millions of ringgit were invested to ensure the facility and equipment are at all time competence for measurement.

Well that is all about the measurement system right now. If god willing, in the next edition we will identify the based unit that were used in measurement and to understand why organization or industry calibrate and test their equipment.

This is our first issue of newsletter in order to informed to whom that may not know, to updates who already know or to pledge our commitment to our loyal customers.

Maybe some of you may not know what is calibration all about? Well calibration can be defined as:-


“ The sets of operation which establish, under specified conditions, the relationship between values indicated by a measuring instrument or system, or values represented by a material measure, and the corresponding known values of a measurand (reference) “

(As defined by ISO, IEC, BIPM & OIML)

Whereas measurement is defined as:-

“The sets of operations having the object of determining the value of a quantity”

(As defined by ISO, IEC, BIPM & OIML)

For example, you may think that the distance from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh is far, but how far is far. Therefore to understand the “far” factor you need to measure and one of the tools you can measure it by kilometer for distance or by hours if you decide to measure it using time.

We have gone through phases by phases of name change from SIRIM – Sime Technologies Sdn Bhd then SST Integrated Technologies and at present we are known as SIME SIRIM TECHNOLOGIES SDN BHD (SST). But that does not jeopardize our quality of work and yet we still strive for continuous improvement in our daily activities.
